History
“History is not a burden on the memory but an illumination of the soul.” — Lord Acton
Introduction
At The Rural Enterprise Academy, the History Department is dedicated to inspiring students to explore the past in order to understand the present and shape the future. We aim to cultivate curiosity, empathy, and critical thinking, encouraging students to see history not simply as a collection of dates and events, but as the story of humanity. By equipping students with these insights, we prepare them for further education and careers in areas such as law, politics, archaeology, journalism, and education, while fostering informed citizens who can engage thoughtfully with the world around them.
Curriculum Intent
Our curriculum blends chronological knowledge with thematic exploration, covering topics such as ancient civilizations, medieval society, the development of democracy, empire and conflict, and social change. We encourage students to think critically about evidence, interpretations, and the causes and consequences of historical events. Through interactive learning experiences, debates, and the use of primary sources, students develop essential skills in analysis, evaluation, and communication.
By engaging with diverse perspectives and stories, students learn to appreciate the complexity of human experience and the importance of understanding different cultures and viewpoints. This empowers them to make connections between past and present, and to recognize how history continues to shape the world today.
Subject at KS3 – Overview
At Key Stage 3, students follow a structured and engaging scheme of work for History, designed to build a strong foundation of knowledge and skills. The curriculum spans a wide range of topics, from the Norman Conquest and Tudor England to the Industrial Revolution, World Wars, and civil rights movements.
The scheme emphasizes enquiry-based learning, encouraging students to ask questions, investigate sources, and develop their own interpretations. Lessons combine storytelling, case studies, and real-world applications, helping students to see history as both relevant and dynamic. Students gain confidence in handling evidence, constructing arguments, and understanding continuity and change across time.
