Safer Internet Day – Tuesday 6th February
Safer Internet Day 2018 will be celebrated globally on Tuesday 6th February 2018 with the slogan “Create, Connect and Share Respect: A better internet starts with you”.
The UK Safer Internet Centre https://www.saferinternet.org.uk/safer-internet-day/2018 provides a wealth of resources for both schools and parents. They have devised a pack for parents, just click on the link above to access all the resource, but a small selection can be viewed by clicking on the links below.
It sometimes appears that, no matter how many times we educate pupils on safe use of the amazing technology that is the internet, some pupils still forget the key messages and put themselves at risk. It is therefore very important that we all work together to guide and monitor young people, to ensure the key messages are repeated time and time again and not just on Safer Internet Day.
The Academy does, of course, operate filters that preclude access to sites that are deemed inappropriate. However, the vast majority of our pupils carry a hand held, powerful computer with them; that is their mobile phone. Again, most pupils have 3G or 4G on their phone and phone providers do not block sites so, whilst it may be impossible for pupils to access sites on a school devise or at home if you have appropriate filters, they can often access the same sites via 3G or 4G on their mobile phone. It is for this reason that educating pupils how to use the internet safely and parental monitoring of its use is so important.
